Pre-release readers are calling it joyful, eccentric, and deeply human:
Early readers describe Country People as a story stolen by its supporting cast, especially Giuseppe the truffle-hunting dog—a meandering, joyful presence whose search for something that isn't there says more about the family's own search for purpose than words could.
One bookseller called it the novel "the world so desperately needs right now," praising Mason's gift for balancing real depth with real hope in a story that feels like it's set in a more optimistic, more magical version of our own world.
Another reader was struck by how Mason makes a novel referencing Milton and Tolstoy feel like such an entertaining read, following Miles's many misadventures with genuine delight rather than literary heaviness.
Readers consistently note the book works as both a comedy of errors and a real meditation on storytelling, belief, and where we find paradise—possibly right in our own backyard.
This book is for you if:
You loved North Woods and want to return to that same corner of New England, now populated with new characters (and a few hidden easter eggs from the last book).
You're drawn to novels that find the magic and mystery hiding in ordinary small-town life.
You appreciate family stories told with real warmth and humor, not just hand-wringing seriousness.
You want a book that's funny enough to read on the porch and thoughtful enough to stay with you long after.
Trove is different.
