Nadia Murad was a young woman in the Yazidi village of Kocho, in northern Iraq, when ISIS fighters attacked in August 2014, killing her mother and six brothers and forcing her into the group's system of sexual slavery. After escaping, she turned her testimony into a global campaign: she became the United Nations' first Goodwill Ambassador for the Dignity of Survivors of Human Trafficking, founded Nadia's Initiative to rebuild communities devastated by genocide, and in 2018 was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize alongside Dr. Denis Mukwege for their work to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war. Her first memoir, The Last Girl, became a New York Times bestseller and introduced her story to millions of readers. In I Choose My Beginning, written again with Jenna Krajeski, Murad picks up where that story left off—not as a survivor defined by what happened to her, but as the architect of what came next.

Critics are calling it inspiring, honest, and moving:
"An inspiring story of a woman fighting to create a life that's all her own." — Kirkus Reviews
"Nadia is a fierce warrior for justice and a beautiful human being I feel privileged to know. She will inspire women for generations." — Amal Clooney
This book is for you if
You read The Last Girl and want to know what Nadia Murad's life looks like now, years past ISIS captivity.
You want a firsthand account of surviving genocide and sexual slavery, told with honesty rather than sensationalism.
You're drawn to memoirs of activism—how a survivor became a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and a founder of a real humanitarian organization.
You want to understand the Yazidi genocide through the story of the woman who helped make the world pay attention to it.
You believe survival stories should end somewhere other than the trauma itself—in choice, strength, and a life reclaimed.
