A three-time National Jewish Book Award winner with a doctorate in Hebrew and Yiddish literature from Harvard, she's the author of novels including The World to Come and Eternal Life, and of the widely discussed essay collection People Love Dead Jews, which first argued that societies love Jewish victims far more than living Jews.
