Pre-release readers are calling it devastating, understated, and profound:
Booker Prize judges call Strout's prose "brilliantly understated and all the more powerful for that."
The Boston Globe praises her "capacious empathy and rigorous attention" to human behavior.
The Financial Times calls it "a profound, resplendent novel."
Time says Strout's "energized prose and gimlet-eyed insights" elevate her game.
This book is for you if:
You’ve read every Elizabeth Strout novel and can’t wait for the next one.
You want quiet, character-driven fiction that still manages to feel urgent and of-the-moment.
You’re drawn to stories about the secrets ordinary people keep from the ones they love most.
You want a Booker Prize contender that’s also a New York Times bestseller.
You appreciate prose that does more with restraint than most novels do with excess.

How renting works
Step 1Choose a Book
Rent or buy what you like.
If we’re missing something, let us know — we can get it for you.
More books is better:
Renting 1 book gives you 30 days to decide
Renting 2 books gives you 60 days
Renting 3 or more books gives you 90 days
Step 2Receive it
Simple, hassle-free, and delivered straight to your door in about a week or less.
We’ll let you know if there’s any delays in getting your book to you, but we’ve got plenty in stock!
Step 3Read and Decide
Read it and decide if you love it.
Love it? You can keep it — we’ll charge the difference between your rental and the cover price, as if you bought it new (plus tax).
And we'll always email you before your rental period ends, so there are no surprises.
Step 4Return it
If you want to return it — no worries!
We’ll send you a free prepaid return label and instructions for an easy return.
Simply ship it back in either the box it came in or any box.
You can drop it off at your nearest USPS location or schedule a free pickup.
Questions?
We expect you may have some questions…
-
We believe hardcover books are too expensive, especially new releases.
Trove gives you a better option to read new books now at an affordable price.
Rent first, then return it when you are done — or keep it if you love it!
-
Choose the Rent New option, read the book for up to 30 days per copy (max 90 days), then return it or keep it.
If you keep it, the remaining balance applies as if you bought it outright.
-
You are charged the day after your rental is due using the payment method we have on file.
Please review your book rental agreement to find the full terms and conditions.
-
Each rental copy is kept for 30 days (maximum 90 days) and whatever you decide is up to you!
The book should be returned in very good condition so another reader can enjoy it.
Returns are easy to process at your local USPS package drop off, or you can schedule a free package pickup at your convenience.
-
Running a few days late? No worries — just let us know by emailing us at hello@trovebookstore.com and we’ll work with you.
You’ll receive several email reminders before the billing date, so just let us know so we can adjust!
-
If a rental book is lost, not returned, or returned with major damage, the remaining purchase balance may still apply.
If something happens to your rental, contact Trove at hello@trovebookstore.com as soon as possible so we can work with you to resolve the issue.
-
You own it! If you rent a book and decide you want to keep it, the remaining purchase balance will apply. No action is needed.
This lets you start with the rental price and only pay the rest if you feel the book belongs on your shelf.
